The Nouns Press Corps - [Rolling Updates]

TL/DR - NOUNS PRESS CORPS is a fully operational press house focused on proliferating the Meme. We’ve already started…

GM Community…

On behalf of our team-- I want to formally introduce the Nouns Press Corps (“NPC”), a small volunteer pod of professional communicators focusing on amplifying all the good works tied to Nouns. Our goal is to advocate for Nouns and Nounish projects in traditional print and online press.

The Why…

Many in professional media (journalists, editors, reporters, and others) are new to web3, NFTs, and decentralization, some are intimately familiar. Therefore a structured onboarding is required to introduce Nouns to them, on their terms.

NPC was founded on the need to build an organic and organized communications strategy that encompassed press, marketing, network building, and more. A small team of us formed and this week we launched our MVP…

A few assumptions -

  • We are focused on “Earned Media”, or earned content, which is any material written about the Nouns organization, that Nouns hasn’t paid for directly or created internally. This type of media is always published by a third party and is the hardest to achieve, usually earned through time and networking. The greatest effort will be personally onboarding journalists to Nouns and the nounish culture.
  • Our efforts will yield little success, at first, until a certain velocity is met at which point compounding kick in.
  • We avoid anyone promising placement for pay, as this is suspicious. Journalists rely on a unique and independent code of ethics.
  • We are currently limited to only engaging with English-speaking press, at this time. We hope to change this in the future. If you speak languages outside of English and want to help advocate for Nouns, join us, we need you.
  • One Important Note - we take this seriously, we do not seek to be the voice of Nouns. Only, one possible conduit to Press. Ultimately we want to provide a connection from the journalists to Nounders (if so desired), Nouners (if so desired), Noun Builders (if so desired), and Community Members (if so desired). Or put another way… We don’t make the message. Yet, we will seek to spread it.

The What… We currently offer six defined services:

  1. Press Liaison — Managing and Responding to incoming press requests from journalists and passing those on to the relevant community members.
  2. Press Release Issuing — Issuing press releases, on behalf of Nounish Projects (that requests it) to the correct journalist or outlet increasing the chance of positive coverage.
  3. Press List Management — Managing the NPC’s Press List. This is a list of Web3 and Non-Web3 journalists across many print, television, and online outlets that should remain abreast of Nounish works.
  4. Pitching Nouns to Press — Networking with Journalists on behalf of Nouns and proactively pitching Nouns. This is where the real press is earned.
  5. Managing Nouns in the News - A weekly round-up of all Noun mentions across the news with corresponding metrics from the team on our deliverables. (Substack Sign-Up - https://nounspress.substack.com/)
  6. Managing NPC Twitter Handle - We use @NounsPressCorps Twitter handle to act as a signal to boost all the nounish things on Twitter.

For example…

  • Interested in Joining the Nouns Press Corps — Reach out, we’re a small team and still growing we could use the help! Email - nounspresscorps@gmail.com.

Over the next month to six weeks, our intended deliverables are:

  • Continue - using @NounsPressCorps Twitter as a signal to boost the community.

Easy Actions YOU CAN TAKE TODAY, to help!

  • Subscribe - to Nouns in the News on Substack - https://nounspress.substack.com/
  • Follow - @NounsPressCorps on Twitter - https://twitter.com/NounsPressCorps

Budget - $0 (so far)

As mentioned above, we are a team of professionals volunteering our time to build and execute the above services & deliverables. We plan to show the community our hard work and what we can contribute when properly formed, organized, and executed.

Please Note - we did apply for a small runway of 2ETH in Round 9 of Prop House (Prop 1222) that ends Tuesday, Sept. 6th. If we win, we will use the ETH to cover any expenses (domain reg, mailing list software, etc) and what’s left as small stipends to pay the team for the work they’ve already started and are continuing to do. Regardless, of Prop House passage, we all believe in the mission and will continue to devote our spare time to the NPC and it’s mission.

“Nothing worthwhile was ever accomplished without the will to start, the enthusiasm to continue and, regardless of temporary obstacles, the persistence to complete” - Waite Phillips (American Philanthropist and Businessman)

Our Hope:

Build all September. Hustle hard and spread the good word about Nouns. Show our value. Then after we reach our deliverables compile a report and present it (including metrics, findings, and suggestions). With that future knowledge, insight, and context, if appropriate, we may seek funding for an extension, yet with a proper budget (likely through NSFW or another Prop House round) as we intend to be thrifty and strategic.

Mini Case Study
Prop 33: Nouns x Super Bowl

Summary:
In February 2022, only six months after the launch of Nouns, the community approved Proposal 33, which exchanged a noun for the opportunity to be in a Super Bowl commercial with a prominent beverage company. At the time, the community was blind to the brand, which ultimately was Bud Light. This opportunity yielded with momentary capturing of attention that lead to some “earned media” and greater engagement rates but not a sizeable increase in unique visitor rates to nouns.wtf.

Objective:
The simple objective was to have a “break-through” moment with mainstream culture, thus proliferating the meme.

Strategy:
There were no real measurable metrics tied to the proposal, as the DAO simply provided the Noun, and nothing more.

Effectiveness:
Using the Barcelona Principles (3.0) passed in 2020 by the PR Industry. The Principles measure the efficiency of PR campaigns and reflect a holistic approach that standardizes measurement across all channels, with an eye toward allowing choice in where to invest in public relations and communications to drive optimal organizational performance. As such, we measured the following key performance indicators:

  • 19 Pieces of Press Coverage - 19 articles were written and published that directly mentioned Nouns DAO or the community. Compared to 5 in Janurary 2022, or 10 a later in March 2022.
  • 90,100,000 of Total Available Audience - This is the combined total of publication-wide audience figures for all outlets that covered Nouns, meaning exposure to possible audience size. Compared to 4,610,000 in Janurary 2022, or 8,430,000 a month later in March 2022.
  • 280,000 of Estimated Views - A prediction of lifetime views of coverage, based on metrics including available audience, engagement rate on social media, and clicks. Compared to 59,900 in Janurary 2022, or 72,600 a month later in March 2022.
  • 50,500 of Unique Visitors to Nouns.wtf - This is the metric of unique visitors to the site in Feburary 2022, compared to 63,000 in Janurary 2022, or 39,700 a month later in March 2022.
  • 3,300 of Unique Visitors to Nouns.wtf on Game Day.
  • 11,400 of Total Engagements on Press Coverage - The combined total of shares on social meda platforms (Twitter & Facebook) of said articles. Compared to 2,550 in Janurary 2022, or 3,710 a month later in March 2022.
  • Average Domain Authority of 69 - “AVA” is a 0-100 measure of the authority of the site that the coverage appears on. Ratings provided by industry expert– Moz. Compared to 65 in Janurary 2022, or 63 a month later in March 2022.

Key Takeaways:

  • Using our KPI’s the opportunity succeed by having an effect in elevating Nouns in media and press across those measurements. Elevated audience numbers, views, engagements and AVA.
  • However, with no clear foresight attached to the proposal regarding communications (marketing, press, etc) it appears that although people we’re talking about Nouns, that did not necessarily trickle down to site visits.
  • We suggest creating standarize metrics that can be evaluated and re-evaluated from time to time.

Key Press Articles:

Note - As we we’re not part of the community at the time, we may or may not have all the facts. Above is information distilled from talking to community members. We intend this mini-case study as a positive impact tool.

We’ll be back this weekend with our regularly scheduled updates and some of new graphs!

[NPC Case Study] - Esports Pod: Confirmed Kills, Earn Press!

Word Count: 360 | Read time: 2 minutes.

Nouns Esports kicked ass earning 19% of all Nouns’ press coverage over the past 13 months. This is despite only operating for five months. That’s a successful proliferation of the meme vs effort.

Why it matters: “Earned Media”, is the hardest media to capture as its’ any material written about the Nouns organization, that Nouns hasn’t paid for directly or created internally. This type of media is always published by a third party and is usually earned through time and networking.

The Nouns Esports Pod has consistently earned press in niche gaming outlets that have penetrated through to gamers– creating a positive immersion of Nouns in new audiences.

The details– in under 5 months of operation the Nouns Esports Pod has:

  • Consistently operated at a high level from organizers, down the ranks, to the pros. This Pod is clearly relying on their team’s talents and competitors’ efforts causing journalists to take notice.
  • Represented Nouns and the larger community in a positive light by creating awareness through victories and exploration in new markets without actual press networking.
  • 23 articles were earned exposing Nouns to 471,000 estimated views/reads.
  • The verticals with the largest market penetration are Dota 2 and Pokemon Unite.

Go deeper:

Nouns Esports has Dota 2 “Last Chance Qualifiers” on October 8-12th, 2022.

Nouns Esports and NPC are in discussions towards a collaborative press effort to maximize current trends.

The Nouns Press Corps follows the Barcelona Principles (3.0) passed in 2020 by the PR Industry. The Principles measure the efficiency of PR campaigns and reflect a holistic approach that standardizes measurement across all channels, with an eye toward allowing choice in where to invest in public relations and communications to drive optimal organizational performance. As such, these are the current key performance indicators:

  • 23 Pieces of Press Coverage - 23 articles were written and published that directly mentioned Nouns or Noun Esports.
  • 45,200,000 Total Available Audience - This is the combined total of publication-wide audience figure.
  • 471,000 Estimated Views - A prediction of lifetime views of coverage, based on metrics including available audience, engagement rate on social media, and clicks.

[NPC Update] - EXCITE, ENGAGE, AND ONBOARD…

Word Count: 388 | Read time: 2 minutes
Issue 5: Week 38: (September 19 to September 25, 2022)

Key coverage from niche outlets, like Decrypt, penetrates down to their audience generating greater engagement and curiosity towards Nouns than traditional press coverage.

Why it matters: Working with outlets to “earn media” means that Nouns’ must rely on those journalists to convey proper excitement and understanding. As such, mainstream media requires hand holding that takes time, whereas niche web3 journalists understand and grasp our vibes immediately. Thus, their readers get excited, then engaged, then onboarded to Nouns through nouns.wtf.

Zoom in:

  • Niche Journalists– pour excitement and curiosity naturally into their articles, which translates to greater article engagement thus more unique visits to Nouns.wtf
  • The Nouns Press Corps “NPC” continues to strengthen our relationship with outlets like Decrypt.
  • Mainstream Media - The NPC continues to onboard key media outlets in a concerted and strategic effort, properly welcoming them into the Nouns ecosystem.

Read Decrypt’s latest - NFTs Will Spawn the Next Marvel or Disney, Says Solana Founder

“Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko tells Decrypt that he believes a major, long-lasting franchise IP could come out of the current NFT space….

‘On the other hand, a project like Nouns uses a “no rights reserved” or open-source approach in which anyone—even people who don’t own the pricey NFTs—can use, modify, and sell any of its imagery.

‘If Yakovenko’s prediction proves to be correct, it’ll be interesting to see what kind of approach wins out: one in which holders (or the general public) can do whatever they want to proliferate the IP, or one in which the original creators remain in charge of the project…”

Metrics - We follow the Barcelona Principles (3.0) passed in 2020 by the PR Industry. The Principles measure the efficiency of PR campaigns and reflect a holistic approach that standardizes measurement across all channels, with an eye toward allowing choice in where to invest in public relations and communications to drive optimal organizational performance. • 115,000 of Estimated Views - Total for September is 674,300.
  • 280 of Total Engagements on Press Coverage - Total for September is 1,612.
  • 73 Average Domain Authority - Average for September is 62.

[NPC Update] - MAKING AN EXAMPLE OF…

Word Count: 296 | Read time: 2 minutes
Issue 6: Week 39: (September 25 to October 1, 2022)

Nouns continue to hang around the conversations of web3 press. But without direction and guidance Nouns’ mentions remain superficial.

Why it matters…

Nouns should be in and around the conversation of many web3 and NFT projects. Yet, we need to encourage the press when mentioning us to (A) backlink to nouns.wtf as a destination for readers, and more importantly (B) dive deeper into our culture. Thus spiking readers’ curiosities to learn more, and click that link!

Zoom in:

"Projects in this category include Avastars, CryptoPunks, and Nouns DAO. These types of NFTs don’t need to be backed up since their metadata, including their art, will always be directly retrievable from Ethereum.” - Bankless

Only a service reference. No backlink.

“The author gives up all copyright and no one has ownership. It can be freely copied, modified, distributed and exhibited, even for direct commercial purposes, such as Mfers, Cryptoadz and Nouns.” - CoinSpeaker

Again, only a service reference. No backlink either. We’re in the conversation, superficially.
