Tech Grants Pod: Szn 2 Ideas and Priorities

TLDR: help prioritize work for the tech pod’s next ~3-month szn.

Szn 1 is coming to a close, with descriptor v2 going live, and DAO v2 about to go into audit. We’re kicking off a new szn 2 of protocol / infrastructure improvements, and we’re asking for your help in coming up with ideas, and then prioritizing the best ones.

Ideas so far

These are just floating ideas, nothing set in stone; please jump in and express your likes and dislikes, and any new ideas or problems you’d like to solve.

  • Check out vapeape’s original post, with a bunch of ideas to get you going

  • Governance

  • Financial mechanisms

    • [:man_technologist::man_technologist::man_technologist:] Allow the DAO to execute proposals that pay builders a predictable amount of stablecoin, using a ETH/stablecoin price oracle (e.g. ChainLink) at the moment of execution (to remove the proposal timeline ETH volatility risk)
    • [:man_technologist:] An on-chain Nouns price feed / oracle
    • [:man_technologist::man_technologist::man_technologist:] Noun lending / buyback
    • [:man_technologist::man_technologist:] Improve approach used by the DAO to acquire nouns (for distribution to builders, etc)
  • Treasury management

    • [:man_technologist::man_technologist::man_technologist:] Research how the DAO can DCA (dollar-cost average) into various tokens
  • Gas optimizations

    • [:man_technologist:] Auction house gas optimizations; can reduce settlement and bid creation gas quite a bit (maybe good to complete if we’re already in there someday)

How you can help

  • Share new ideas / alterations to existing ideas
  • Let us know what you’re most excited about and why

Next up

  • We’ll process all feedback into a final list of candidates
  • Nouners will be invited to vote to determine priorities for szn 2

If you have any questions please hit us up in the #54-tech-grants discord channel.

Thanks!

  • Granular vote delegation (without manually moving Nouns to separate wallets) :+1: (I need this very much so)

  • Allow the DAO to execute proposals that pay builders a predictable amount of stablecoin, using a ETH/stablecoin price oracle (e.g. ChainLink) at the moment of execution (to remove the proposal timeline ETH volatility risk) :+1: (as we scale this will be needed more often than not)

  • Improve approach used by the DAO to acquire nouns (for distribution to builders, etc) :+1: (helps scale bids as more and more subdaos pop up)

Focusing on gov participation, I’d be interested in:

  1. Compensation for governance participation (e.g. voters and delegators split a pool of assets - could be nonfinancial like poaps)
  2. A delegation drive - maybe a way to name a referrer who got you to delegate your noun and a prize pool split across referrers that successfully get dormant nouns delegated)
  3. Prop house for delegates - time consistent auction for delegation where the bids are delegates - could also be compensated

granular vote delegation & predictable stablecoin payments!

+1 predictable stablecoin payments. this would solve a huge pain point that gets brought up very frequently

i think integrating stablecoin payments into proposals would be a big win for proposers, would also support granular vote delegation but would also be interested to hear the costs/timelines for each of these before we actually decide what to pursue. if one idea is 10x cost/dev time vs another we should be taking that into account when ranking.

also worth noting that a recent meeting with nouns foundation legal counsel recommended against implementing a rage-quit mechanism so we should have further discussions if that ends up being something that the tech pod wants to pursue.

Good idea to get a sense of cost when ranking! Getting accurate estimates is a costly exercise, but I think we can provide at least a ballpark.

yes I think ballpark would definitely be sufficient - just looking for the context of “this feature cost ~10x vs the other…is it going to provide 10x value/get 10x amount of use?”

hey @Oni, added ballpark cost emojis in the original post

Adding a few thoughts regarding the “on-chain nouns price feed / oracle”:

The way it could work is by storing each auction result in the auction house contract, including the price at which the auction closed.
Having an on-chain oracle for the prices of Nouns can open up a lot of potential DeFi use cases. The one that immediately comes to mind is for enabling using Nouns as a collateral for lending protocols.
Given that it’s a relatively simple addition, I think it can open a lot of interesting potential integrations for Nouns.

Thank you for the thoughtful approach and integration of counsel for fulsome consideration.
